CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS

THE BEGINNING OF BEANS BEADS

In late July 2022, my daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Within hours, our lives were completely turned upside down. After completing a full 2years of treatment, we are still not quite finished. My daughter, nicknamed Beans, decided that she wanted to make bracelets to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and donate a portion of the money earned to childhood cancer research. She wants other kiddos with cancer to know that no child fights alone.

CHILDHOOD CANCER FACTS:

  • In 2022, it is estimated 10,470 children (birth to 14 years) and 5,480 adolescents (aged 15-19 years) were diagnosed with cancer. (childrenscancercause.org)

  • There is high demand for development of treatments for childhood cancer rather than using treatments developed for adults. Even those who are cured may suffer long-term side effects as a result of the cancer treatments they received. Children who were treated for cancer are twice as likely to suffer chronic health conditions later in life versus children without a history of cancer. (American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts & Figures 2020 and 2023)

  • Childhood cancer survivors are at a 15-fold increased risk of developing Congestive Heart Failure and are at 7-fold higher risk of premature death due to cardiac causes, when compared with the general population. (childrenscancercause.org)

  • The average family spends more than 40 hours per week caring for childhood cancer patients, parents are often forced to take leaves from work (creating financial strain), both the patient and his/her siblings have increased risk of psychiatric issues, and the patient is at a greater risk for neurocognitive development issues. (National Foundation for Cancer Research)
